Learning to grow your own cooking herbs gives you the freedom of enjoying the best flavored and tastiest foods all the year round. Having the knowledge of the right cooking herbs also helps you to distinctly differentiate between culinary or cooking herbs and spices.
Is It A Spice Or Herb?
Cinnamon sticks that are often used in preparing hot chocolates or even apple ciders are spices whereas parsley is believed to be an herb. What’s more, cooking herbs are generally believed to be fresh or (sometimes) even dried leaves that are obtained from various kinds of plants and are different to spices.
Herbs grow the best when the climate is temperate and this is another point of difference between cooking herbs and spices because the latter are best grown in tropical climes. Another point of difference between cooking herbs and spices is that the former help to add a subtle type of flavor whereas the latter are more robust and pungent.
Before growing your own cooking herbs it would be advisable to first of all select a proper location which must be one that gets plenty of sunlight and where drainage is good and nutrition is proper. Some people grow culinary herbs in outdoor gardens while others opt for patio containers and still others prefer greenhouses.
If you wish to grow cooking herbs in an outdoor garden you should ensure that the garden is located close to your kitchen. If the herbs get plenty of sunlight their foliage will become dense, color darkens and the herbs will contain more of essential oils. In addition, these herbs also require adequate ventilation and good drainage.
You will of course need to fit in your cooking herbs garden with the amount of available space though an ideal growing area should be twenty feet by four feet in area. You can also choose different types of cultivars with some being ornamental whiles others are aromatic.
If you have pretensions (or, are) a gourmet you will no doubt have already realized the importance of using gourmet herbs, which in the right combination, can make or even break any food preparation.
Having a working knowledge of growing other kinds of vegetables makes it easy to cultivate cooking herbs. There are some special kinds of cooking herbs with special properties to help in repelling insects and pests and are also immune form garden diseases. This gives you a clear advantage to growing your own culinary herbs.
